During the campaign season, we interviewed all the candidates for the Omaha City Mayoral race, including the two who advanced through the April primary election: Incumbent Jean Stothert (R) and Douglas County Treasurer John Ewing Jr. (D). We partnered with Flatwater Free Press and Civic Nebraska on their Voter Guide for the Omaha City Election and shared those interviews with them for wider publication. Dan asked both Mayor Stothert and John Ewing about the downtown-to-midtown streetcar project — construction is already underway, and it’s sparked a lot of debate. In this episode, Dan dives into the ‘LNK for Fair Housing’ ballot initiative. On May 6, Lincoln voters will decide whether to outlaw source-of-income discrimination in city code. Currently, landlords can legally refuse prospective tenants based on how they plan to pay rent — including Section 8 housing vouchers, Social Security, veterans benefits, disability income, tips or cash wages, and informal employment. Dan speaks with Elizabeth Engman and Kasey Ogle of Collective Impact Lincoln, the group behind the initiative, to break down what’s at stake for voters.
